Matt Johnson joined Cotton & Company in January 1994, was elected a partner with the firm in October 1995, and was elected executive managing partner in July 2006. Matt joined Cotton & Company with 10 years of accounting experience, 7 of which were with the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
Matt has directed and participated in federal financial statement audit engagements since before the passage of the Chief Financial Officers (CFO) Act in 1990. He has been instrumental in developing the firm’s financial statement audit practice, conducting engagements with numerous government and commercial agencies. His experience also includes financial and accounting system reviews, performing quality control reviews and corrective actions, information security and procedure reviews, and training course development and instruction in governmental auditing.
Matt received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Oregon. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), licensed in Virginia, a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), and a Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM). He is also a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Association of Government Accountants (AGA), Information System Audit and Control Association (ISACA), and has served on the Professional Ethics Committee and the Governmental Accounting and Auditing Task Force for the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA).
Mr. Johnson resides in Northern Virginia with his wife and has two adult children. In his free time he enjoys going fishing and running.
